Volpi is a leading manufacturer of optoelectronic modules that sit at the heart of In Vitro Diagnostics (IVD) and Life Sciences instruments. Our technology enables innovative diagnostic solutions used by leading global instrument manufacturers as well as emerging start-ups in the field.

To support our continued growth, we are looking for a Python Software Engineer – Test Systems to join our team at our Swiss headquarters in Dietikon (Zurich).

In this role, your main focus will be the development, extension and maintenance of Python-based software frameworks for automated test systems used across product development, manufacturing and production testing.

What You can expect:

This is a software-driven engineering role, with approximately 70% hands-on Python software development and 30% hardware integration. You will design and implement reusable software components, test system drivers, hardware interfaces and automation tools that connect measurement devices, instrumentation, embedded systems and production test setups.

You will work closely with R&D, embedded software, electronics, manufacturing engineering, production and quality teams to build reliable, scalable and maintainable test software for complex optoelectronic and mechatronic systems.

Your Responsibilities:

Develop and maintain our Python-based test system framework used across multiple product programs
Design and implement test system drivers and hardware interfaces (serial, Ethernet, instrumentation protocols)
Build and improve automated test sequences, including hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) setups
Support the development of manufacturing and end-of-line test systems
Contribute to CI/CD pipeline integration for automated test execution
Collaborate closely with embedded software engineers to ensure effective system-level test coverage
Support tool validation activities in coordination with the Quality team

Your Profile:

Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics or a related engineering discipline
Strong hands-on experience in Python software development is required
Experience developing test automation software, test frameworks, hardware drivers, data acquisition tools or measurement software
Ability to write clean, structured, modular and maintainable Python code
Good understanding of software development practices such as Git, unit testing, debugging, code reviews and documentation
Hands-on experience with hardware interfacing and driver development
Experience integrating software with hardware, instruments or test equipment using interfaces such as serial communication, Ethernet, USB, SCPI or similar protocols
Experience with automated testing methodologies, HIL setups, measurement systems or laboratory instrumentation is a strong advantage
Experience working with CI/CD pipelines is beneficial
C/C++ knowledge is a plus, especially when interfacing with embedded firmware
Experience with tool validation in regulated environments such as IVD, medical devices, MedTech, automotive or aerospace is beneficial
Structured, methodical way of working and strong problem-solving skills
Fluent in English; German is a plus
